You know that we’re passionate about wiper blades, but did you know that to get the most out of your wipers, wiper fluid (or washer fluid) has an important role to play? Wiper fluid works in conjunction with your wiper blades to provide a better clean, and can also support in extending the life of your wiper blades.
What is windscreen wiper fluid?
Wiper fluid is a mix of water, chemicals, and sometimes other additives such as anti-freeze, which support in keeping your windscreen clean, free of debris, and support visibility. Wiper fluid is also useful in colder climates, as it can contain additives that prevent freezing during winter.
It is important to regularly check the level of your wiper fluid, and top up as required. We recommend checking every time you refuel your car with petrol.
How does wiper fluid support in cleaning your windscreen?
While you can just use water, using a wiper fluid has three main advantages:
-
Improved cleaning and visibility. Wiper fluid contains detergents and other chemicals that help to dissolve and loosen dirt, grime, insects, and other debris that may be present on the windscreen.
-
Reduced streaking. Wiper fluid contains detergents and other additives that help to break down and remove stubborn dirt and grime from the windscreen's surface. This helps to prevent streaking and smearing, which can occur when using plain water or when dirt is simply spread around by the wiper blades without being properly cleaned.
- Maintaining wiper blade performance. Dry wiper blades may not make proper contact with dirty windscreens. With wiper fluid, as the wiper blades move across the windscreen, they come into contact with the sprayed wiper fluid and the loosened dirt and debris. Wiper fluid also helps to lubricate and clean the wiper blades themselves, which can prolong their lifespan and maintain their effectiveness.
How does windscreen wiper fluid help extend the life of your wiper blades?
While improved cleaning and visibility is considered the primary benefit of using wiper fluid, it can also help extend the life of your wiper blades in a number of ways:
-
Lubrication. Lubrication reduces the friction between the wipers and the windscreen. This prevents premature wear and tear on the blades, by allowing them to move smoothly across the glass surface.
- Preventing streaking. Wiper blades can be damaged by debris and dirt on your windscreen. In supporting the removal of dirt, wiper fluid supports your wipers in maintaining proper contact with the glass, allowing the blades to produce a streak-free windscreen. Additionally the blades will wear more evenly, helping to extend their lifespan.
- Reducing dryness. Wiper blades require replacement when dry or cracked, which are both signs of the rubber deteriorating. Wiper fluid supports in keeping the blades moist and flexible, reducing damage and increasing durability.
